By Why This Is (More or Less) a Beauty Blog

When I started blogging, way back when, I started for many reasons. I used to be an aspiring web designer, so it was another way to be connected to the internet. I suffered from anxiety problems and I wanted a way to vent once in awhile. Many of my real life friends didn’t follow my blogs, so it was a nice way to talk about things I didn’t want to bother my friends with.

While I still struggle with issues with anxiety, my days of posting anything and everything about my life are over. There’s something to be said about venting to strangers, but at the end of the day, that’s not me anymore.

It’s probably a good thing. I used to be an extremely negative person. I’ve come a long way since then. Now, when I blog, I just like to share things I’ve found or that I like. But I’ve noticed that I tend to post a lot about beauty on here. I don’t know who I have as followers at this point, hell, I don’t know if anyone even comes back to read my posts. And that’s fine. I am still going to blog, because I like it and I’ve always liked it. It’s not about collecting followers to me, I’d probably still blog if no one read it.

But if you want to know why it’s very beauty heavy these days- here’s why. Makeup has without a doubt become my hobby. When my hobby, photography became my day job, it became less and less a hobby every day. I tried to avoid it at first. I tried to do a photo diary so I could still work on my own personal photos outside of work. I’m not saying I hate it now, because that’s not true at all. I still LOVE photography. Nothing compares to the overwhelming feeling of pride and happiness I feel when I create a photograph from start to finish. From the concept to the final edited product. And I probably will once in awhile get the urge to create a piece. But plain and simple, it doesn’t feel like a hobby anymore. I never wanted that to happen, but it’s okay that it did. I love what I do, I just don’t always enjoy doing it “just for fun” anymore.

What do I like to do for fun? Watch makeup videos. Practicing different looks. Practicing different techniques. I love the versatility of makeup; how I can do a subtle look one day and turn around the next day and do a full glam look if I want. I’ve gotten better over the past few years and it’s just fun for me.

I’ve stopped doing my makeup every morning for work, but sometimes if I have the day off I’ll do a makeup look even if I’m not going anywhere. In fact, if I’m not going anywhere it’s the perfect time to practice something new!

I love blogging. I love makeup. I love blogging about makeup. I’ll still stand by the fact that this blog will just be about whatever I feel like talking about from makeup to gaming to photography to music… But most days, I feel like talking about makeup.

So that’s why you’ve seen a lot of “beauty guru Jessa” over the past few months. She’s probably here to stay, at least for awhile.

I’m not sure why I felt the need to make a whole post about this? I don’t know, I just haven’t written in awhile and I wanted to, I guess.

What would you like to see more of on here? Do you care? 😁

Moving, Weddings, And a Cat’s Stupid Adventure

I’m long overdue for a post. The reason I’ve been away for so long is because….

Grizz and I bought a house! It finally happened. We waited a long time to get this house, but we’re finally in.
We’ve been busy getting things in order and it’s coming along. I have things I want to blog about, and I’m really excited because I have a studio now, so I’ll have room to shoot photos for things. It’s my goal now that I have the extra shooting space to plan more Outfit of the Day things. I even may do the holiday look book again, although I may try and do it a little differently. The wig collection is something I’m finally going to be able to get started on.

We were also busy with his sister’s wedding. Which was incredibly cool to be a part of it. It even ended up making the news! They got married on a moving “L” train in Chicago. It caught fire with the news, the even went on live TV!
Here’s one of the articles and the interview with Windy City Live is at the bottom of it.

I’m like, hey, I know them! ^_^

We threw a couple of parties here already, which is so exciting now that we have the room for it. Grizz’s birthday is coming up and we’ve been having an unseasonably warm fall, so we’re having another party that hopefully we’ll get to have a fire. 🙂

We have a few things we’re not used to having to do all the time, like double checking our doors. Last night our back door was not only unlocked, but as Grizz discovered when he got up for work this morning, it wasn’t even latched. The door was wide open for who knows how long. My first instinct was to jump up and look for Demon, our cat, who’s been obsessed with trying to sneak out whenever the door is open. As I expected, he was nowhere to be found. Grizz was already looking outside for him. I went down the block but didn’t see him. I was so heartbroken, and I remember shutting off the lights in the kitchen but I didn’t check the door so naturally I was blaming myself. And I was so worried about him. He’s so dark so he’d be hard for people driving in cars to see…
As we were admitting defeat and heading inside, something told me to ask Grizz to shine his flashlight under the deck. When he did, there was a set of glowing eyes looking at us. Luckily for us, he’s very food driven. So opening his can of cat food was all we needed to do to coax him out.

Stupid cat. Scared the shit out of me. I’m really glad that he didn’t get that far. I suppose if anything this whole experience will make me obsessed with checking to make sure the doors are locked.
I don’t even like cats… how did this little jerk claw his way into my heart?  It’s also been a small challenge trying to get him to get along with our dog, Eva. She’s used to cats because she’s lived with them almost her whole life. So she really doesn’t care at all about Demon. Like, she’s far to busy begging people to throw her ball and climbing into everyone’s lap even though she is far too big to be a lap dog. Demon, however, has never seen a dog. So, he took a bit longer to adjust. He’s still not a huge fan of her, but they coexist. And they’ll both snuggle me, so that’s all I wanted out of the whole arrangement.

Yay!

So that’s what’s been going on lately.

I want to get back on track blogging-wise so I’m trying to plan simple things I can do for right now.
I think the next thing I do will be a makeup thing. I ordered an eyeshadow palette that was a collaboration with Morphe and KathleenLights on YouTube. I’ve been wanting to buy a YouTube collab, but this was the first one that was affordable so I went for it. It should be here Friday so I think I’m going to do a first impression or something like that over the weekend.  I literally just found out (like, I’m watching her October favorites right now and she JUST said) it’s sold out already. It released a week ago and it’s limited edition and it’s already gone. I’m glad I got it right away. It’s kind of the reason I want to do a lookbook again because I’m already thinking of cute holiday makeup looks.

Anyway, I think that’s it for me. I’ll talk again soon. 🙂
Hopefully everyone had a safe and fun Halloween!

What did you dress up as?

After a year in the making I’ve actually managed to pull together my photography site! All sessions I do in the future will be accessible through there. I’ll continue to post Photo Diaries on here, but most galleries will be posted on there.

Check out the site.

When I do get my home studio up and running, that site will also be the way to book sessions with me. I’m not offering them yet, however I am offering editing. So, if you are a professional photographer, you can send me a request here  and I’ll email you more details. I don’t know how many photographers actually like to outsource their editing, but I personally love to edit pictures!

Con Plans for 2016 & Photo Diary: Alter Ego

With Anime Central just around the corner, it won’t be long before my social media fills up with upcoming cosplay plans. I figured now would be the perfect plans to address my plans for up and coming conventions in the Chicagoland area.  Sometime last year, I decided my ultimate photo goal would be to shoot cosplay professionally and make super awesome photo manipulations to go with it. One year later, I have not really moved very far forward in that goal. I love what I do right now, and I’m comfortable. My friend from work came up with a super awesome plan to start his own cosplay photo booth to set up at conventions. And he pulled aside me and a couple other friends from work who love to cosplay as well to see if we wanted to dress up and model for him so he can put out some adverts. And additionally, if he did set up a booth, we would be allowed free passes as well to dress up and wander around cons to send people his way. I think this would be a fantastic way to get a foot in the door for my goals, and I couldn’t wait to get photos take of my own costumes, so I jumped at this chance. I think we need to generate more interest, and the cost of a booth is not cheap so we need a way to get a good buzz going. But my photo session was several weeks ago now and I ADORE how they came out. I’ll post the gallery at the end of this post.

Meanwhile. Here’s the plan. Anime Central falls during a horribly busy time for my job, so it’s really hard to get time off for it. As it is right now, I work on the Friday and Saturday. I was really bummed about Saturday because my friends and I wanted to go to the formal dance they have. But alas, I have to work a graduation and OF COURSE it’s at night instead of in the morning. >.< It’s looking like I’m off that Sunday, so if money allows, I want to try to make it that day. (Being in the process of buying a house kind of means making sure your money doesn’t go anywhere haha) If we do make it Sunday, I will not be photographing that day. I just wanna run around in a simple costume and enjoy what’s left of the con. So I will probably throw together a Pokemon trainer costume and do just that. I am, however, helping a friend who’s new to this whole scene work out her first cosplay. She’s going as Kurisu from Steins Gate. I have the perfect wig for her so I’m working on getting that detangled and ready to go for her. Her boyfriend, who is introducing her to the scene is going as Rintarou and I’ll be helping him find a good wig for that. So, I’m living through my friends this time around. I think as soon as I find out the dates next year I’m going to try and put in the time off right away. I just feel bad for being unavailable during one of our busiest seasons.

Next, is my holy holiday with my friends, Bristol Renaissance Fair, which is in July. We won’t be going opening day, but still that Sunday. I’ll be doing my typical Dragon Trainer costume that I’ve been building upon for years. I’m actually going to be making my first attempt at styling a wig for that. Usually I just buy the wig I need, and most of the characters I do have pretty simplistic styles so I never need to do anything to them. I want to create a pretty Renaissance style braided look. I might even cut it. We’ll see. I figured, it’s the one I like the least, so if I ruin it I won’t be TOO sad. There’s plenty of wigs I could wear for the costume instead, and if I fail I can get one for next year that’s already styled or something.
At some point we’ll be going a second time so I’ll shoot then. I don’t know exactly when we’ll do that but I think it’ll be August.

And… we’re going to Wizard World, probably around the same time we make our second trip to the Fair.  If I don’t cosplay that day, I will definitely shoot. But Wizard World isn’t as exciting as say, C2E2, which I missed this year and hopefully I can make it next year, even if it’s the only con I get to go to.

So, those are my costume/photo plans for this year. Not as action packed as I would like, but hopefully one day I can turn that around and be able to work these cons as a photographer.

Now, here’s the gallery of photos my friend from work took of me. I have a Pokemon trainer set, which I’ll post some other time. This set is my alter ego, Jessamine, who’s back story I’ve talked about on here a few times. I like to think when I’m shooting at cons, I am her. But. Anyway. I love them. They turned out just a lovely as I’d hoped!

Wig Poll! Help Me Decide!

I have a little bit of Christmas money that I allowed for myself to buy a new wig, after using the rest of it to adult. I know the next wig I want is a shorter one, and eventually I want all of these.

But… I DON’T KNOW WHICH ONE I WANT FIRST… AHHHH!

Which do you think I should get?

My Makeup Story

So, I thought it would be fun to talk a little bit about my personal opinions about makeup. Then I found this questionnaire. I used to do this sort of thing with my old Xanga blog all the time. And I promise my blog is not going to spiral into this all the time thing. But, I did figure this would be a bit easier for me and less horribly boring for you, since it saves me from babbling on and on about makeup.

Let’s get to it.

1. How often do you wear makeup?
Almost every day, to varying degrees. More natural looks for work and bolder looks for going out.

2. When did you start using makeup?
I started playing with makeup when I was in 8th grade. But, I went through phases when I didn’t wear any on and off for a long time.

3. Do you remember the first kind of makeup you ever used?
I don’t know what the brand was called but I’m sure it was from Claire’s. Either that or Avon.

4. Do you refuse to leave the house without wearing makeup?
No.

5. Or do you find it more liberating to not use cosmetics?
No, I’d prefer to wear it, but I can give my face a break once in awhile.

6. What’s your favorite brand of makeup ever?
I’m a big fan of e.l.f.

7. Where do you buy most of your cosmetics?
Drug store. Almost exclusively. I also shop at Ulta.

8. How much is too much to spend on makeup?
Depends on what it is, I suppose. But I don’t think I’ve ever spent over $20 on any one thing.

9. About how much makeup do you own?
Not much, one small cosmetic box full and like, 2 eyeshadow palettes that don’t fit in there.

10. Lipstick or lip gloss?
Lipstick

11. What’s your favorite color lipstick and/or lip gloss to wear?
My current favorite is the super cheap Wet N Wild, and my favorite color of that one is called Pink Ice.

12. If you could only use one makeup product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Probably my Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer. Because at least I can look alive everyday.

13. What’s your favorite eyeshadow color?
I’ve been obsessed lately with this really pretty metallic green that came in Ulta’s Baked Eyeshadow Trio: Wall Street.

14. Do you wear a lot of makeup during school?
I’m not in school. But I did sometimes.

15. Do you ever wear makeup to the gym or the beach?
Well for the gym, I usually went after I still had my makeup on from the day, and it’s not like I’m going to wash it off just because I’m going to the gym. For the beach I may wear some waterproof mascara, but that’s it. Gotta look cute still, ya know?

16. When it comes to eyeliner, do you use a regular pencil or liquid eyeliner?
I actually don’t wear a lot of eyeliner anymore. But whenever I do, I switch off.

17. Have you ever gotten your makeup done professionally?
I have not.

18. Have you ever wanted to be a makeup artist?
Yeah, for glamour shots and stuff.

19. Do you use foundation, concealer or bronzer? Or all of them?
Foundation and Concealer.

20. Be honest, do you always wash your makeup off before bed?
I’d be lying if I said I have never skipped it. But it’s bad to skip. I’m definitely pretty good about washing it off every night, for the most part.

21. What’s one makeup trend you would love to try?
I would like to attempt through whole highlight/contour thing.

22. What’s one makeup trend you just don’t get?
The aforementioned contouring.

23. Which celebrity do you think always has awesome makeup?
I honestly have no idea. I guess I never really pay attention to that.

24. Do you think you’re good at applying makeup?
I think I’m okay. I’m probably about as good as I’m ever gonna get at it.

25. Do you ever watch makeup tutorial videos on YouTube?
Yes. Very yes!

That’s all for that. I’m hard at work on my Christmas Haul. So, that should be coming soon. Keep an eye out.
