Con Plans for 2016 & Photo Diary: Alter Ego

With Anime Central just around the corner, it won’t be long before my social media fills up with upcoming cosplay plans. I figured now would be the perfect plans to address my plans for up and coming conventions in the Chicagoland area.  Sometime last year, I decided my ultimate photo goal would be to shoot cosplay professionally and make super awesome photo manipulations to go with it. One year later, I have not really moved very far forward in that goal. I love what I do right now, and I’m comfortable. My friend from work came up with a super awesome plan to start his own cosplay photo booth to set up at conventions. And he pulled aside me and a couple other friends from work who love to cosplay as well to see if we wanted to dress up and model for him so he can put out some adverts. And additionally, if he did set up a booth, we would be allowed free passes as well to dress up and wander around cons to send people his way. I think this would be a fantastic way to get a foot in the door for my goals, and I couldn’t wait to get photos take of my own costumes, so I jumped at this chance. I think we need to generate more interest, and the cost of a booth is not cheap so we need a way to get a good buzz going. But my photo session was several weeks ago now and I ADORE how they came out. I’ll post the gallery at the end of this post.

Meanwhile. Here’s the plan. Anime Central falls during a horribly busy time for my job, so it’s really hard to get time off for it. As it is right now, I work on the Friday and Saturday. I was really bummed about Saturday because my friends and I wanted to go to the formal dance they have. But alas, I have to work a graduation and OF COURSE it’s at night instead of in the morning. >.< It’s looking like I’m off that Sunday, so if money allows, I want to try to make it that day. (Being in the process of buying a house kind of means making sure your money doesn’t go anywhere haha) If we do make it Sunday, I will not be photographing that day. I just wanna run around in a simple costume and enjoy what’s left of the con. So I will probably throw together a Pokemon trainer costume and do just that. I am, however, helping a friend who’s new to this whole scene work out her first cosplay. She’s going as Kurisu from Steins Gate. I have the perfect wig for her so I’m working on getting that detangled and ready to go for her. Her boyfriend, who is introducing her to the scene is going as Rintarou and I’ll be helping him find a good wig for that. So, I’m living through my friends this time around. I think as soon as I find out the dates next year I’m going to try and put in the time off right away. I just feel bad for being unavailable during one of our busiest seasons.

Next, is my holy holiday with my friends, Bristol Renaissance Fair, which is in July. We won’t be going opening day, but still that Sunday. I’ll be doing my typical Dragon Trainer costume that I’ve been building upon for years. I’m actually going to be making my first attempt at styling a wig for that. Usually I just buy the wig I need, and most of the characters I do have pretty simplistic styles so I never need to do anything to them. I want to create a pretty Renaissance style braided look. I might even cut it. We’ll see. I figured, it’s the one I like the least, so if I ruin it I won’t be TOO sad. There’s plenty of wigs I could wear for the costume instead, and if I fail I can get one for next year that’s already styled or something.
At some point we’ll be going a second time so I’ll shoot then. I don’t know exactly when we’ll do that but I think it’ll be August.

And… we’re going to Wizard World, probably around the same time we make our second trip to the Fair.  If I don’t cosplay that day, I will definitely shoot. But Wizard World isn’t as exciting as say, C2E2, which I missed this year and hopefully I can make it next year, even if it’s the only con I get to go to.

So, those are my costume/photo plans for this year. Not as action packed as I would like, but hopefully one day I can turn that around and be able to work these cons as a photographer.

Now, here’s the gallery of photos my friend from work took of me. I have a Pokemon trainer set, which I’ll post some other time. This set is my alter ego, Jessamine, who’s back story I’ve talked about on here a few times. I like to think when I’m shooting at cons, I am her. But. Anyway. I love them. They turned out just a lovely as I’d hoped!

Wig Poll! Help Me Decide!

I have a little bit of Christmas money that I allowed for myself to buy a new wig, after using the rest of it to adult. I know the next wig I want is a shorter one, and eventually I want all of these.

But… I DON’T KNOW WHICH ONE I WANT FIRST… AHHHH!

Which do you think I should get?

DIY: Floppy Disk Coasters

So, for the longest time Grizz and I didn’t have coasters for our dining table or coffee table.

Then one day I went to a yard sale, and a lady was selling a pack of colorful floppy disks. Since no one uses floppy disks anymore, she told people they were coasters. I found this hilarious, because I am a total dork. So, I bought them with the specific intention to use them as coasters.

If you ever happen upon some unwanted floppy disks, or unwanted objects of a flat persuasion that interest you… I’m going to show you how we turned them into coasters. And it’s so easy it will blow your mind.

Step one. Get unwanted floppy disk. Or other unwanted object of a flat persuasion.

Step two. Get little rubber stickers. I don’t know what store would sell something like these. But we got them on Amazon.

DIYcoaster-1819

Step three. Put little rubber stickers on whatever you decide is the bottom four corners of the unwanted floppy disk/unwanted object of a flat persuasion.

DIYcoaster-1821

Step… no wait. There’s no more steps. That’s it. That’s all it took. And now you have awesome coasters that will have all your friends asking “wait… are these floppy disks?”

DIYcoaster-1822

Yes. Yes they are.

Also, to clean, wipe it with a damp cloth or paper towel. I wouldn’t recommend submerging it. No, not at all.

My Pokémon Type

I might have you fooled by the title, I’m almost sure of it. This is more so about a moment of self discovery than it is about Pokemon. But Pokemon has a hand in it, that’s for sure.

I have been meaning to talk about this for months. Like, since ACEN, I have been brewing this topic. I’ve waited so long to actually do it, as usual, so here I am trying to remember what it was I was going to say. But I’m gonna do my best.  To be honest, I’m a bit appalled at myself for waiting so long to talk about such a moment of self discovery.

When my friends and I grew tired of walking the sales floor at ACEN we decided to check out the different panels and anime screenings the convention had to offer. One in particular caught my eye, of course. It was titled “What Pokemon type are you?”

So we went. This panel was very interesting – the person leading it had mapped out all the various personality types on the Myer-Briggs scale and assigned them to matching Pokemon types! It was so cool.
I honestly never looked to deep into it, I always kind of thought there was introvert and extrovert and I was an introvert and that was that. I didn’t realize that there was all these other things that come into play. I wish I took notes. I wish I even remembered what my “type” was. I know whatever it was corresponded with the bug/grass type (she had to combine a couple types. I’m sticking with grass). But I can’t remember which personality type I fell into anymore. (I think it was INFJ) The interesting thing was, once she had you place yourself into the personality type, she went on to describe each type individually and more in depth. So even though I was focusing on my own and waiting to hear about myself, I got to hear about each personality type. And besides my own, there was one other that sounded very like me. And she did mention earlier on that it’s possible to be two types, just like it’s possible for a Pokemon to be two types.
This post would be so much easier if I could remember any specifics. But all I think I can remember is the other type that sounded like it fit my life painfully well is that it fell under the extrovert category. Now like I said, I always classified myself as an introvert. But this panel really got me thinking about where my energy comes from.
I do like to spend time by myself to sort of recharge. Especially after a long hard day of dealing with a lot of people. BUT, what I realized, especially that weekend of being with friends constantly, is I feel very energized after spending time in a small group of friends. After ACEN and a wedding that same weekend I felt so incredibly energetic that it surprised me. But at the same time I wasn’t ready to go back to work because I wanted some time to myself.
I’ve noticed that more and more lately the best weekends are the ones where I spend one day with my friends and another day relaxing by myself.

It was that weekend that I really realized that while I may be an introvert, I’m also an extrovert. Maybe I hate bars, and unfamiliar parties, and awkward social obligations, but there’s no denying the energy I feel when I’ve had a great time with my close friends.
And that’s not weird. If a Pokemon can have two types, so can I.

My “Complete” Ren Faire Costume

I wish I could remember where I got all these things. I’m gonna try my best to be as detailed as possible talking about it all, but I truly can’t remember where I got a majority of the costume pieces.  I posted a couple photos on blogs in the past but every year something gets added to the costume. So this is the current collection.

Ceramic Mug

I don’t remember where this is from, but I would know it if I saw it, so I’ll try to update it later. It is from a shop at the Faire, I do remember that much.

Leather wrapped Vile

My “dragon medicine” (water). Little bottle that hangs from my belt along with the (above mentioned) mug. And my purse. Don’t remember the shop. I would know it if I saw it though.

Gloves

I do believe Tara gave these to me a long time ago. Either her or Kelsey. I would imagine whoever it was got them from Hot Topic. I don’t know though. I want to replace them this year with dragon claw gauntlets. I have to see if I can even afford them though.

Boots

These boots where from Groupon. They were perfect for my costume and I didn’t have any footwear at the time, so I couldn’t pass them up. I think they were less than $30. Buying footwear at the Faire is super expensive so I’m glad I found these! (That’s right, I DO get shoes to match my costumes, but not my outfits.)

Belt

This belt is custom made for me by my friend Matt. He does a fantastic job with leather. I helped! I stained the leather black!

Red and Black detailed purse

Another item I got at a shop at the Faire and I don’t remember which one. It’s definitely another I would know if I saw, so I’ll try to get an update on that as well.

Bells!

I don’t always wear them, but I pulled them out in case I decide to for tomorrow. Got them at a shop at the Faire. I dunno. So many of them sell stuff like this that I couldn’t tell you.

Corset

My corset! Ah! I do believe this is my first real piece of Renaissace clothing. James bought it for me there, and I’d know the shop if I saw it. Love the dragons, and it really did help me go with a theme!

Skirt

Skirt! It’s a long (goes down to my feet) skirt with a detail that goes so perfectly with my theme I couldn’t not get it! I got it on Amazon. The page isn’t working though, otherwise I would link it here.

Dragon Earrings

I got these at a shop there, that maybe I would know if I ran into it. I did end up modifying them. One of them came with an attached ear cuff that I decided I didn’t really like after all, so I removed it. Besides that, my sister in law got me a cool cuff. Which is pictured later.

Dragon cuff

This was the (above mentioned) ear cuff I was talking about. I kind of want to paint the stone red because it doesn’t match, but damn it’s cool! It’s actually earring, and the tail is the backing so it looks like it’s going through your ear and wrapping around the cartilage. I should have gotten the whole thing in the shot but I’m obsessed with my macro filters…

Necklace

This is a necklace that I’ve made and remade time and time again. The original pendant was from Spencer’s, I believe. Or Hot Topic. The chain and beads are probably from Michael’s and I modified this myself. It may be hard to tell but the dragon is wrapped around a sword.

Baby Dragon

This is the most important piece of my costume! He’s a baby dragon puppet named Jareth the Goblin King, Champion of Bacon. The shop James got him from is called Midsummer Knight’s Dream and they have all kinds of different pets in all sorts of sizes and colors and ages! They even do custom orders.  He is my most favorite piece ever, in fact we’ve turned back for him because I’ve forgotten him at home! He does get a lot of attention whenever I’m there. Everyone’s always asking where he’s from so that’s why I actually know the name of the shop!

The only thing I didn’t photograph today to show is the new wig. I do have a cell phone image…

IMG_20150630_213922

Wig is by Louise Maely – my new favorite shop to buy wigs from. It’s on Amazon, and you can find it here. I haven’t decided how to wear it just yet. I put it in a braid because it’s super long. I might leave it like that.

So Bristol Renaissance Faire opened today and we’ll  be going tomorrow! If you follow me on Instagram, I will be posting throughout the day. So, be prepared for that. I won’t be bringing my camera. We like to try and go another day later on so I can wear a less elaborate costume and be more comfortable carrying a camera with me. I’d like to try and enter a photo contest this year, so hopefully we do end up making it there a second time.

Hip, hip, huzzah!
