With Anime Central just around the corner, it won’t be long before my social media fills up with upcoming cosplay plans. I figured now would be the perfect plans to address my plans for up and coming conventions in the Chicagoland area. Sometime last year, I decided my ultimate photo goal would be to shoot cosplay professionally and make super awesome photo manipulations to go with it. One year later, I have not really moved very far forward in that goal. I love what I do right now, and I’m comfortable. My friend from work came up with a super awesome plan to start his own cosplay photo booth to set up at conventions. And he pulled aside me and a couple other friends from work who love to cosplay as well to see if we wanted to dress up and model for him so he can put out some adverts. And additionally, if he did set up a booth, we would be allowed free passes as well to dress up and wander around cons to send people his way. I think this would be a fantastic way to get a foot in the door for my goals, and I couldn’t wait to get photos take of my own costumes, so I jumped at this chance. I think we need to generate more interest, and the cost of a booth is not cheap so we need a way to get a good buzz going. But my photo session was several weeks ago now and I ADORE how they came out. I’ll post the gallery at the end of this post.
Meanwhile. Here’s the plan. Anime Central falls during a horribly busy time for my job, so it’s really hard to get time off for it. As it is right now, I work on the Friday and Saturday. I was really bummed about Saturday because my friends and I wanted to go to the formal dance they have. But alas, I have to work a graduation and OF COURSE it’s at night instead of in the morning. >.< It’s looking like I’m off that Sunday, so if money allows, I want to try to make it that day. (Being in the process of buying a house kind of means making sure your money doesn’t go anywhere haha) If we do make it Sunday, I will not be photographing that day. I just wanna run around in a simple costume and enjoy what’s left of the con. So I will probably throw together a Pokemon trainer costume and do just that. I am, however, helping a friend who’s new to this whole scene work out her first cosplay. She’s going as Kurisu from Steins Gate. I have the perfect wig for her so I’m working on getting that detangled and ready to go for her. Her boyfriend, who is introducing her to the scene is going as Rintarou and I’ll be helping him find a good wig for that. So, I’m living through my friends this time around. I think as soon as I find out the dates next year I’m going to try and put in the time off right away. I just feel bad for being unavailable during one of our busiest seasons.
Next, is my holy holiday with my friends, Bristol Renaissance Fair, which is in July. We won’t be going opening day, but still that Sunday. I’ll be doing my typical Dragon Trainer costume that I’ve been building upon for years. I’m actually going to be making my first attempt at styling a wig for that. Usually I just buy the wig I need, and most of the characters I do have pretty simplistic styles so I never need to do anything to them. I want to create a pretty Renaissance style braided look. I might even cut it. We’ll see. I figured, it’s the one I like the least, so if I ruin it I won’t be TOO sad. There’s plenty of wigs I could wear for the costume instead, and if I fail I can get one for next year that’s already styled or something.
At some point we’ll be going a second time so I’ll shoot then. I don’t know exactly when we’ll do that but I think it’ll be August.
And… we’re going to Wizard World, probably around the same time we make our second trip to the Fair. If I don’t cosplay that day, I will definitely shoot. But Wizard World isn’t as exciting as say, C2E2, which I missed this year and hopefully I can make it next year, even if it’s the only con I get to go to.
So, those are my costume/photo plans for this year. Not as action packed as I would like, but hopefully one day I can turn that around and be able to work these cons as a photographer.
Now, here’s the gallery of photos my friend from work took of me. I have a Pokemon trainer set, which I’ll post some other time. This set is my alter ego, Jessamine, who’s back story I’ve talked about on here a few times. I like to think when I’m shooting at cons, I am her. But. Anyway. I love them. They turned out just a lovely as I’d hoped!
