Tune Talk: BadLands by Halsey

Tune Talk: BadLands by Halsey

It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about music on here. Almost 9 months to be exact. It has been a bit since an entire album has caught my attention. Actually, that’s not really true. I’ve just been too lazy or busy to talk about them.

Today I’m going to get into BadLands by Halsey.  Almost a year ago I talked about Crybaby by Melanie Martinez and BadLands was recommended to me. Halsey also constantly came up as a recommended artist for me because I liked Melanie Martinez. Well, it took me long enough but I finally got it. I think I realized I would probably like her when I found out she was the one who sings “Castle” which I hear a lot in fantasy like commercials.

I got her album this week and I cannot get enough. I’m the type of person who will play an album over and over until I’m sick of it. Because I’m the worst. Seriously, why do I do this to myself?

But okay. I’m really into this. I really like the catchy sort of pop feel, all the while the lyrics are edgy. It’s the same sort of thing I liked about Melanie Martinez except that she has a more cutesy musicbox sound while Halsey’s songs sound like they could be something fun and upbeat that you could dance to.

This is definitely an album I can let play from start to finish. I think the only one I’m not into is “Walk the Line.”  My favorites are “Strange Love” and “Gasoline.”

She has a Vevo so I’ll leave this here.

I’m really bad at this whole review thing.  But check her out because I seriously can’t stop listening to her!  I’ve been doing a ton of beauty blogs lately so I’d love to keep talking about music if you’re interested in it. I can talk about Babymetal or Walk the Moon, who I’ve been also finding myself playing a lot of lately. I could also share what’s on certain playlists I’ve made.

I’m up for whatever. I’m really trying to write more often.

Tune Talk: Dark Before Dawn by Breaking Benjamin

Tune Talk: Dark Before Dawn by Breaking Benjamin

Breaking Benjamin’s Dark Before Dawn came out in June. Which means this post is a long overdue one. But, that’s the way I handle things on this blog so let’s just go with it. Six months behind on life, that sounds about right. Anyway.

There was a time when I though Breaking Benjamin was the best thing ever. The driving rock, the angsty lyrics, the moody music videos, and not to mention the sweet sound of Ben Burnley’s voice. What’s not to love? If, you know, you’re into that sort of thing. But the more I’ve been listening to them, the more I’ve been feeling like they’re one of those bands whose music all sounds the same. I’ve always felt that they get better with every album, so I was still hopeful when I heard about the release of Dark Before Dawn. Dear Agony was such a powerful and incredible album, they had kind of a lot to live up to there. And with all the band members, save for Ben, having been replaced I wasn’t sure they’d make the cut.

I’m not going to say I don’t like it. I’m not going to say I’m not as into them as I once was, even though that one might be true. But I was underwhelmed. This was a band whose next album was always way better than the one before it, at least in my opinion. And they fell short. I won’t discredit the new members. I think they did an amazing job at keeping within the same sound. Maybe I’m not as musically aware as I’d like to think but I hardly even noticed a difference, actually.
This album isn’t bad. Not at all. It’s well worth buying and listening to, that’s for sure. However, it’s no Dear Agony. So if you’re like me and you expected this album to surpass Dear Agony, you’ll probably be at least a little disappointed. But still, check it out. There’s some great songs. My favorite is “Angels Fall” which makes my anxiety playlist. (Let me know if you’re interested in that and I’ll post it. Just a list of songs that make me feel good when I’m feeling anxious.)

Dark Before Dawn on Amazon

“Failure” is a great one too. So check it out.

Tune Talk: Crybaby by Melanie Martinez

Tune Talk: Crybaby by Melanie Martinez

It’s been a long while since I’ve talked about music and even longer while since I’ve done a CD review, if I’ve even done one at all on this blog. I bought Melanie Martinez’s Crybaby when it came out and I’ve been listening to it a lot!

I don’t know if her sound is for everyone, but it’s certainly for me! And let me tell you all about it!

First off, the only thing I don’t really like is the fact that a lot of the songs start to sound the same after awhile. Many artists have this happen to them, including several of my favorites, so I’m not too worried about this.
But I’ve been listening to her nonstop!
I love her style, she sort of has a creepy-cute thing going on. Which is perfect, because her sound really blurs the lines between creepy cute. It’s sort of like a child’s nightmare. I love the way the melodies are very music box and pretty sounding, but when you listen to her lyrics, she’s singing about some darker themes.
I don’t know what else to say. Like I said, I’ve been listening to her so much lately. Her music had already inspired some potential photo shoots. It’s been awhile since I’ve discovered a new artist that I love, but she is it.

If you haven’t listened to her music already, she has a Vevo. This is my favorite song, “Pity Party.”

I would highly recommend Crybaby by Melanie Martinez, so check it out!

So, I’ve been missing the days when I used to talk about music back on my old Xanga blogs, so I think I want to try to keep doing it. So Tune Talk may end up being a regular thing.

I did another post like this in the past and I really wanted to do it again. I think I’m going to try and get better at collecting articles and things so I can do something like this at the end of each year. But here’s a couple of things I’ve collected.

Animal Rescue Site

Who doesn’t love animals? Seriously, get out if you don’t. The page I linked to is their merch page,  but they post adorable videos and other things too. And if  you buy their merch, it goes to a great cause – feeding animals in shelters. Gotta love the cause. ♥

Why Does Music Give Us Chills?

This super awesome article explains the brain chemistry behind people who get chills when listening to music? Did you know that 50% of people get chills while listening to music? I didn’t! I thought I was like, the only one. But apparently not. This is super cool to me! Check it out.

El Goonish Shive

This is a web comic. It’s pretty interesting, and gets increasingly better as the artist ages. I haven’t read it all the way through, but James is on the current panels. I don’t know that it would be everyone’s cup of tea, as it’s pure fuckery. Gender-swapping. Gender-swapping everywhere.

Broken Light Collective

This is a website right here on WordPress featuring photographers all over the place. Submissions are sent in from people with various mental illnesses who’ve used photography to get through hard times. I think this is an absolutely beautiful concept, dealing with anxiety myself. The only thing I dislike is that submissions are not allowed to be graphic or triggering. I totally understand why, I really do. But some beautiful art comes from deep uncensored pain. But really a fantastic site. I even changed them to my AmazonSmile charity. (If you’re not  using that, what are you waiting for? You don’t have to spend any extra money to donate to your favorite charity! Get on board! 😀 )

9 Things I Wish People Understood About Anxiety

This. This article could not have put it more perfectly. I agree wholeheartedly with everything posted here, apart from number 8. I mean number 8 is true to a point, but ultimately I wish I could just get rid of it. Great read, especially for people who really can’t understand what a person with anxiety is feeling.

The Princess in Training

This last one is my good friend Tiffany’s blog! I owe my recent interest in style all to her which ultimately lead to my decision to pursue fashion photography! She’s taking a little break right now, but there’s some good reads so check it out! 🙂

And those are my linkworthy articles of 2014! I know there’s not that many of them… I started collecting them later in the year. Next year will be better!

To Swift or Not To Swift?

Let’s talk music for a minute.

I hate when this happens. (First world problems, I know) An artist I like comes out with a new CD. Two singles are release from said CD. One of them is great and the other one sucks. What do I do? I don’t know if I should buy the CD or not.

The Amazon samples never help me out! I could just buy the one single that I like… but then I feel weird about having all the other CDs and only one song from this one. Yes, I’m one of those. I load an entire CD onto my mp3 player before even listening to it. And I don’t delete the songs I dislike. Why do I do this to myself? I don’t know. My music addiction is stronger than I like to admit? It can’t be helped.

Anyway, Taylor Swift. 1989. I love “Blank Space” but I don’t love “Shake it Off”. What do you think?

My Playlists: Fall Faves

My Playlists: Fall Faves

Hey everyone!

I know I’ve mentioned this before but I love music! I love music all day, everyday. But sometimes I’m in an extra musical mood and today is definitely one of those days. So I really wanted to do a music post.

For the last few days all I’ve been listening to is my Fall Faves playlist. Basically any artist that I tend to listen to more often in the fall is on here. As of right now it consists of three artists that I really think you should check out if you’ve never heard of them.
So here they are:

Poets of the Fall.

Aptly named. They really sound poetic and theatrical. It’s beautiful.
My favorite song right now is “Maybe Tomorrow is a Better Day” though my favorite songs always change.

And my favorite quote is actually from a different song called “Given and Denied”  but the lyric goes
Fall like a leaf in the wind on the ocean
Of blue like your eyes in the twilight theater
With symphonies playing in the world without sound
We’re given and denied

Brand New.

They don’t really have a fall theme or anything but I dunno, they can be chilling so I like to listen to them right now. My favorite song is easily “Play Crack the Sky” at the moment.

And my favorite quote is from the same song:  Your tongue is a rudder. It steers the whole ship. Sends your words past your lips or keeps them safe behind your teeth. But the wrong words will strand you. Come off course while you sleep. Sweep your boat out to sea or dashed to bits on the reef.

The Swell Season.

I love the acoustic/folk sort of style in the Fall! My favorite song is usually “Two Tongues.”

I don’t really have a favorite quote but I can stick with a song from one of my other favorites, “Falling Slowly” which goes Well you have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It’s time that you won

And there you have my Fall Favorites! I think I might do a playlist post more often because I simply LOVE talking about music! I probably won’t go into as much detail for the other ones, it’s just that this one only consists of three artists.

And while I have you here, please take the time to like my photography Facebook page I finally got around to making! 🙂
