Moving, Weddings, And a Cat’s Stupid Adventure

I’m long overdue for a post. The reason I’ve been away for so long is because….

Grizz and I bought a house! It finally happened. We waited a long time to get this house, but we’re finally in.
We’ve been busy getting things in order and it’s coming along. I have things I want to blog about, and I’m really excited because I have a studio now, so I’ll have room to shoot photos for things. It’s my goal now that I have the extra shooting space to plan more Outfit of the Day things. I even may do the holiday look book again, although I may try and do it a little differently. The wig collection is something I’m finally going to be able to get started on.

We were also busy with his sister’s wedding. Which was incredibly cool to be a part of it. It even ended up making the news! They got married on a moving “L” train in Chicago. It caught fire with the news, the even went on live TV!
Here’s one of the articles and the interview with Windy City Live is at the bottom of it.

I’m like, hey, I know them! ^_^

We threw a couple of parties here already, which is so exciting now that we have the room for it. Grizz’s birthday is coming up and we’ve been having an unseasonably warm fall, so we’re having another party that hopefully we’ll get to have a fire. 🙂

We have a few things we’re not used to having to do all the time, like double checking our doors. Last night our back door was not only unlocked, but as Grizz discovered when he got up for work this morning, it wasn’t even latched. The door was wide open for who knows how long. My first instinct was to jump up and look for Demon, our cat, who’s been obsessed with trying to sneak out whenever the door is open. As I expected, he was nowhere to be found. Grizz was already looking outside for him. I went down the block but didn’t see him. I was so heartbroken, and I remember shutting off the lights in the kitchen but I didn’t check the door so naturally I was blaming myself. And I was so worried about him. He’s so dark so he’d be hard for people driving in cars to see…
As we were admitting defeat and heading inside, something told me to ask Grizz to shine his flashlight under the deck. When he did, there was a set of glowing eyes looking at us. Luckily for us, he’s very food driven. So opening his can of cat food was all we needed to do to coax him out.

Stupid cat. Scared the shit out of me. I’m really glad that he didn’t get that far. I suppose if anything this whole experience will make me obsessed with checking to make sure the doors are locked.
I don’t even like cats… how did this little jerk claw his way into my heart?  It’s also been a small challenge trying to get him to get along with our dog, Eva. She’s used to cats because she’s lived with them almost her whole life. So she really doesn’t care at all about Demon. Like, she’s far to busy begging people to throw her ball and climbing into everyone’s lap even though she is far too big to be a lap dog. Demon, however, has never seen a dog. So, he took a bit longer to adjust. He’s still not a huge fan of her, but they coexist. And they’ll both snuggle me, so that’s all I wanted out of the whole arrangement.

Yay!

So that’s what’s been going on lately.

I want to get back on track blogging-wise so I’m trying to plan simple things I can do for right now.
I think the next thing I do will be a makeup thing. I ordered an eyeshadow palette that was a collaboration with Morphe and KathleenLights on YouTube. I’ve been wanting to buy a YouTube collab, but this was the first one that was affordable so I went for it. It should be here Friday so I think I’m going to do a first impression or something like that over the weekend.  I literally just found out (like, I’m watching her October favorites right now and she JUST said) it’s sold out already. It released a week ago and it’s limited edition and it’s already gone. I’m glad I got it right away. It’s kind of the reason I want to do a lookbook again because I’m already thinking of cute holiday makeup looks.

Anyway, I think that’s it for me. I’ll talk again soon. 🙂
Hopefully everyone had a safe and fun Halloween!

What did you dress up as?

Tune Talk: BadLands by Halsey

It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about music on here. Almost 9 months to be exact. It has been a bit since an entire album has caught my attention. Actually, that’s not really true. I’ve just been too lazy or busy to talk about them.

Today I’m going to get into BadLands by Halsey.  Almost a year ago I talked about Crybaby by Melanie Martinez and BadLands was recommended to me. Halsey also constantly came up as a recommended artist for me because I liked Melanie Martinez. Well, it took me long enough but I finally got it. I think I realized I would probably like her when I found out she was the one who sings “Castle” which I hear a lot in fantasy like commercials.

I got her album this week and I cannot get enough. I’m the type of person who will play an album over and over until I’m sick of it. Because I’m the worst. Seriously, why do I do this to myself?

But okay. I’m really into this. I really like the catchy sort of pop feel, all the while the lyrics are edgy. It’s the same sort of thing I liked about Melanie Martinez except that she has a more cutesy musicbox sound while Halsey’s songs sound like they could be something fun and upbeat that you could dance to.

This is definitely an album I can let play from start to finish. I think the only one I’m not into is “Walk the Line.”  My favorites are “Strange Love” and “Gasoline.”

She has a Vevo so I’ll leave this here.

I’m really bad at this whole review thing.  But check her out because I seriously can’t stop listening to her!  I’ve been doing a ton of beauty blogs lately so I’d love to keep talking about music if you’re interested in it. I can talk about Babymetal or Walk the Moon, who I’ve been also finding myself playing a lot of lately. I could also share what’s on certain playlists I’ve made.

I’m up for whatever. I’m really trying to write more often.

Recent Tweets

I know I’ve been MIA on here again. I’m popping on here briefly just to say that I’ll probably be away for a little while longer. I’m going to be really busy in this week coming up (if all goes according to plan anyway) so I figured a quick appearance would be good.

If you don’t know what’s up, I’ll updated you in a few weeks. But also I post on Instagram frequently so you can always get caught up that way.  The short version is I’m most likely be moving on Saturday (if nothing goes wrong tomorrow >.<) and potentially I’ll post Instagram Stories all day.

I don’t have many ideas for posts at this time, but I think once I figure out what’s going on and get settled in I will finally be doing my wig collection since I’ll have the room to do so.

Anyway, in the meantime you can keep up with me on Twitter but mainly Instagram, both are @ softlysaturated.

See you later.

Dancing Through Life

Updated Brush Washing Routine

A couple years back I discovered the best way to wash my makeup brushes so I started getting into the habit of cleaning them on a regular basis. Since then, I’ve learned new things and I’ve updated my routine.

Now it’s even easier than before. So I decided to make this post to show you my new and improved routine.

As you can see here, I collect all my brushes that are on deck to be washed in this separate cup so I know which ones I was planning to wash.Brushes-1

First step is to take a little bit of baby shampoo and deposit it into a small dish. Brushes-2I got this plastic one for like 70 cents at Target. Brushes-3I have baby shampoo because it’s gentle for washing synthetic wigs and hair extensions, so I figure it would be just fine for synthetic brushes as well. (All of mine are cheap, synthetic brushes, I don’t buy anything expensive when it comes to makeup) I find that baby shampoo is much milder on the brushes and still gets them clean, so I no longer need to use a dish soap and olive oil.

Then, I wet the brush of choice and dip it into the dish.Brushes-4Brushes-5

Next, I take this super nifty brush egg and use it to scrub the dirt and makeup off. This thing is so cool. KathleenLights  mentioned this thing in her brush washing routine and I can’t believe how awesome it is. I got it on Amazon for less than a dollar, although I think it’s gone up since then. But even still, a couple of bucks for something so useful. It’s like a little wash board for your brush. It really helps get a nice deep clean very quickly.

Brushes-6

Obviously I can’t do this one-handed. I was shooting this by myself so I had to take it like this.

Then, I rinse them off. Here’s the really helpful thing about this brush egg: I had a lot of trouble with not rinsing some of my brushes properly. I’ll come back to check on them in a few hours and realize I’ve left a lot of suds on there. And this really helps with that because you can keep scrubbing under the running water until it comes back with no suds. Then you know it’s finally rinsed! Brushes-7

When they’re all done I put these brush guards over them, leaving a couple inches of room so they can be dried upside down in the cup. I got mine at Icing in the mall, but I see they’re also on Amazon, so I’d suggest getting them from there. Icing always overcharges for stuff.Brushes-9

So I leave them upside down for awhile and I check on them later. If they’re pretty dry I’ll put them back with the others!Brushes-10

Since changing my routine, I’ve saved a lot of time and therefore have started cleaning them as often as I should and I’ve cut down on wasting paper plates, red solo cups, paper towels, and olive oil. And all the things I use can be stored together very neatly. Brushes-12

How often do you wash your brushes? What brush cleaning technique changed your routine?

Wet n Wild MegaLast Liquid Lip Color Review + Swatches

Alright, I don’t think I’ve done anything like this on my blog but I’ve been getting a little more into lip products so I thought I’d talk about a recent discovery here.

As I was wandering around CVS one day, picking up a last minute wedding card (last minute, story of my life) I came across the Wet n Wild MegaLast Liquid Lip Color. The lipsticks I use are by Wet n Wild and I’ve always thought they were just okay. I mean, they were good for being 99 cents, but they really didn’t last long. Especially for me, since I have a bad habit of rubbing my lips together and biting them a lot. For that reason, I don’t really wear lipstick all that much anyway.  But I saw these and remembered hearing pretty good things about them. And they were on sale. So I grabbed a couple. Apparently they’re not really found anywhere other than CVS, at least not as far as I’ve been able to tell. Since I don’t really frequent CVS, that’s probably why I’ve never seen them before.

I am obsessed. I’m sure that there’s better ones out there but those were the ones I wanted to try since the price point is phenomenal. And I love them! I now have six shades so those are the ones I’m going to talk about. I went with a pretty decent range of colors, so I don’t necessarily see the need to get any more just yet, but who knows. It’s not like they’re terribly expensive. But these are the ones I have right now so they’re the ones I’ll swatch and talk about.

First off, let me just talk about them as a group. The application is just like a lip gloss, which might turn most people away but I like it. It actually gives me more control. It feels really glossy at first but it dries pretty quickly and then it looks beautiful! The only problem I’ve had so far is when you try to touch them up they can get kind of clumpy. You really have to work it out and be careful.  Other than that, they last a long time without having to touch them up, and they don’t smudge off. I was super excited when I gave Grizz a big kiss on the cheek and it didn’t rub off!

So next, the shades.

First up is “Raisin the Roof.” Megalast-2

This one is my darkest shade and it has a slight shimmer to it. It looks like a dark red in the tube, but I guess by the title it’s supposed to be like a raisin color, so maybe a dark purple? That’s not really what it looks like to me when I wear it, but it does show through in the swatch.  I really like this one. I was going for a rock star look last weekend so I paired it with a deep smokey eye and it looked stunning!

Megalast-3

The next one is “Cherry on Top”Megalast-4

and as you could probably guess, it’s a bright cherry red. It’s definitely one that’s only good with specific looks, but it’s really pretty.Megalast-5

Next, I got “Red My Mind”Megalast-6

because I really love to do a very natural face with a classic red lip once in awhile.  Something about it looks really fresh and classic. There’s nothing much to say about this shade other than it’s perfect for that. The swatches of “Cherry on Top” and “Red My Mind” look pretty similar, but “Cherry on Top” is definitely more vibrant on my lip.  “Red My Mind” just looks way more classic. Megalast-7

Now for my favorite, “Pocketful of Roses.”Megalast-8

This one is just a very nice pink. It’s not a nude or natural sort of pink, it has a little bit of a pop but it’s still super subtle. I actually ended up wearing this one to the wedding I was talking about. And for most makeup looks, I find myself reaching for that one the most because it’s just so perfect for almost everything.Megalast-9

Okay, so on to “Click on My Hyperpink”Megalast-10

This is a really bold pink, really bold. I think it’s just something nice to have in the collection in case you want a bold look. The swatch and the tube color remind me of “Pink Ice” from their dollar collection which was my favorite shade from there, but when I wear it on my lip it is WAY more bold. I’ll probably save this for a super specific occasion, it’s honestly a bit much.

Megalast-11

This one is “Pink Perfection”Megalast-12

and it’s a very nude pink. It’s very, very sheer and has a nice shimmer to it. I really like this when I want a bold eye look so I don’t want my lips to be doing too much. This is definitely something that can be used for a nice every day look as well.Megalast-13

All in all, I find these to be wonderful for the price point, which I believe was around $3 a tube, maybe less. They were buy 2 get 1 free at CVS when I first picked them up which really made them worth it for me. I think some shades are a little harder to work with than others, so I will say to watch out for that. Like, when I was saying they can get kind of clumpy when you reapply, I feel that was more true for “Pink Perfection” and “Click On My Hyperpink” than the others. I’m not sure why that is. I feel that may be a dealbreaker for some people but it didn’t really bother me, it just meant I had to take an extra second to make sure I smooth it out nicely. So, despite all that, this was actually a game changer in my makeup routine because it really made me want to actually wear lip color!

Do you have these Megalast Liquid Lipsticks? What’s your favorite shade? What’s one makeup item that completely changed the game for you?

I have six pride bracelets available! Get one here!

Pride Bracelets

I had a couple different ideas for a post in mind, but I wanted to do this instead. I’ll work on the other ones throughout next week, as I’m off work for a little while.

I was feeling really upset over the news about what happened at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. But instead of sitting there posting about how sad I was that this happened, I really wanted to do something about it. It was one thing to try and make a donation to the victims and their families, and that’s absolutely wonderful for those that did. They really need it, so I’m not saying we shouldn’t donate to that, by any means.

But I wanted to do something for the bigger picture. I want to donate to somewhere that will fight for equality.  I decided to make rainbow bracelets to sell and donate all the proceeds to Equality Illinois  which does just that. I was able to make a bunch and sell them to my friends. And now we’ve raised $65 for the cause. I still have 7 more left and I really want to sell them all! So, if you’re interested in helping the cause and getting a cute bracelet, the link will be at the end of the post!

I have so many wonderful family and friends that are so scared about their lives and the lives of their loved ones following this horrible tragedy. It’s time to step up and do our best to end the discrimination. If you are feeling lost or scared as a result of all this, I love you and I’m thinking of you.

Love will always win.
