Tune Talk: Dark Before Dawn by Breaking Benjamin

Breaking Benjamin’s Dark Before Dawn came out in June. Which means this post is a long overdue one. But, that’s the way I handle things on this blog so let’s just go with it. Six months behind on life, that sounds about right. Anyway.

There was a time when I though Breaking Benjamin was the best thing ever. The driving rock, the angsty lyrics, the moody music videos, and not to mention the sweet sound of Ben Burnley’s voice. What’s not to love? If, you know, you’re into that sort of thing. But the more I’ve been listening to them, the more I’ve been feeling like they’re one of those bands whose music all sounds the same. I’ve always felt that they get better with every album, so I was still hopeful when I heard about the release of Dark Before Dawn. Dear Agony was such a powerful and incredible album, they had kind of a lot to live up to there. And with all the band members, save for Ben, having been replaced I wasn’t sure they’d make the cut.

I’m not going to say I don’t like it. I’m not going to say I’m not as into them as I once was, even though that one might be true. But I was underwhelmed. This was a band whose next album was always way better than the one before it, at least in my opinion. And they fell short. I won’t discredit the new members. I think they did an amazing job at keeping within the same sound. Maybe I’m not as musically aware as I’d like to think but I hardly even noticed a difference, actually.
This album isn’t bad. Not at all. It’s well worth buying and listening to, that’s for sure. However, it’s no Dear Agony. So if you’re like me and you expected this album to surpass Dear Agony, you’ll probably be at least a little disappointed. But still, check it out. There’s some great songs. My favorite is “Angels Fall” which makes my anxiety playlist. (Let me know if you’re interested in that and I’ll post it. Just a list of songs that make me feel good when I’m feeling anxious.)

“Failure” is a great one too. So check it out.

Song of the Week: Without You

I’m finally gonna post the song I planned to post like two weeks ago but got distracted by other songs.  This is my favorite song from Breaking Benjamin’s Dear Agony “Without You”.

Song of the Week

Search for the answers I knew all along
I lost myself, we all fall down
Never the wiser of what I’ve become
Alone I stand a broken man

All I have is one last chance
I won’t turn my back on you
Take my hand drag me down
If you fall then I will too
And I can’t save what’s left of you

[Chorus:]
Sing something new
I have nothing left
I can’t face the dark without you
There’s nothing left to lose
The fight never ends
I can’t face the dark without you

Swallow me under and pull me apart
I understand there’s nothing left
Pain so familiar and close to the heart
No more, no less, I won’t forget

Come back down save yourself
I can’t find my way to you
And I can’t bear and face the truth

[Chorus]

I wanted to forgive
I’m trying to forgive
Dont leave me here again
I’m with you forever, the end

[Chorus]

Holding the hand that holds me down
I forgive, forget you, the end
Holding the hand that holds me down
I forgive you, forget you, the end

I feel the need to point out that I totally got sidetracked from posting this because when I went to Google to search for the lyrics, I realized that the homepage was a fully functional Pac-man game.

Anyway. Have a great weekend!

AMV Monday!

Well, I finally decided on what to do for Monday…
AMVs!

They combine two things that I think are quite awesome: anime and music.
I don’t know a whole lot of anime, but I think I can find all sorts of well put together stuff to post.

I’m going to be lazy for the first post. So if you are friends with me on Facebook, you might have seen it already. (Unless you don’t click on anything I post)

I’m currently re-watching Trigun, which is a fantastic series and probably tied for number one with Fullmetal Alchemist.  So I searched for Trigun AMVs, and this is the first one that showed up. And it happened to be… Breaking Benjamin!!
The entire video is using the episode titled “Diablo” so the song “Dance With The Devil” is unbelievably fitting.  Anyway, here it is.

.:Let’s Have Some Fun, This Beat is Sick:.

What makes a song so wonderful?  I mean, what is it about your favorite song that pleases your ear so much?  Or any song, for that matter?

Why do I have so much music on my Zune?  What is it about all 1,370 songs in my collection that stands out to me?

I can’t really say.

Maybe it’s the poetic lyrics of some artists.  Or the catchy beat of another.

For instance, I love Lacuna Coil for the harmony of the two singers and how beautifully it blends with their metal sound.  I love Breaking Benjamin for the way their instruments sound with Ben’s voice. I love Brand New for their abstract lyrics and unusual sound.  I love Lady Gaga for her catchy songs and strange lyrics.  I love Taylor Swift for her relatable songs and her fun sound.  I love Poets of the Fall because of the singer’s theatrical voice and their poetic lyrics.  I love Chevelle for their rock sound and Disturbed for David’s voice.  I love Three Days Grace because they sound bad ass but they sing a surprising amount of love songs.  I love Linkin Park for their diversity in sound.

I love several other artists for countless reasons.

What speaks to you?

.:I Am a Shadow on the Wall:.

Finals are officially over.  I can finally find some more time to read Wheel of Time. Anyway,  you know I’m here to talk about the Breaking Benjamin concert.  ♥

Well. Let me start with a small rant about concerts and people…  because the rest is going to be fill with pure awesomeness.

<rant>

Why is it that no one at concerts has any concern for short people?  Like, at all.  Seriously.  I mean, I know a lot of people go to shows to mosh and rock out and all.  That’s cool.  I used to wish I had the strength to hold my own in that sort of setting.  I don’t care very much about that anymore, since I go to concerts to see the band and to soak in the music.  And there are plenty of others like me.  People who either don’t care to mosh, cannot do it without getting squished, or people who just want to be close to the artists.  Why is it necessary to be a complete douchebag when you see a short little girl trying to push her way to the front?  Go ahead and mosh all you want.  The problem here is, while you’re doing that, I can’t see over you. Whereas it wouldn’t kill you to let me in front of you because you can easily see over me.  I was so close to the front before I ran into that fuckhead.  Then I was basically stuck, squished between rowdy jackasses.  I constantly have this problem at concerts.

</rant>

Anyway.  Time for the story.

I went to the concert with Tara, Daveface, and Amanda. And I hope they had fun.  I ended up getting seperated from them during the first performance, but it’s cool.

The first band that played was Janus, a local band who is definitely starting to get more attention now.  And they deserve it.  Up until that night, I’ve only heard their song “Eyesore” once.  But they rocked. It was the first time I’ve been introduced to a band I didn’t know at a concert and ended up really liking them.  Janus, you gained a new fan that night.  I had a good spot during that show.  It didn’t get rowdy yet and I was pretty much in the center, a few rows from the stage.  I had a good time.

Sick Puppies came on next.  I’ve only heard two songs from them.  “My World” and one other that I can’t remember the name of.  I really like “My World” but otherwise, I’m not very big on them. They played a decent show and all, but it was then the crowd got wild and I spent a majority of their set trying to find a good spot where I wouldn’t get trampled on.  I finally shoved my way out of the crowd in frustration and stood off to the right side, kind of towards the back.  I had a good view, but I was kind of pissed off.

After they were done, the crowd seperated to get drinks or whatever.  I noticed a small spot by a group of people by the railing seperating the crowd from the gap where the security gaurds stand in front of the stage.  I decided I no longer cared about anyone there but myself so I invited myself to that spot that may or may not have been taken by someone from that group of people standing by it. It was right in front, near the stage, off to the right.  I basically figured that how far off to the side I was didn’t matter because the guys were going to move around a lot.

Finally the moment I was waiting for… the guys came on the stage.  They opened with “I Will Not Bow” as I kind of figured they would.  They also played, not in this order, “Until the End”, “Had Enough”, “Polyamorous”, “So Cold”, “Sooner or Later”, “Into the Nothing”, “Fade Away”, “Breath”, and “Diary of Jane”.  I, of course, went crazy when they played “Breath.”  They also did a cover of “Dream On” by Aerosmith, which made me especially happy.  Aerosmith was one of the bands I grew up listening to because of my parents, and “Dream On” is my favorite song.  And then, I was also surprised to hear them play “Blow Me Away”.  This was my first time seeing Breaking Benjamin, and I don’t know if it’s typical for them to play it.  But it’s a song that isn’t on any of the CDs.  It was cool anyway.  It’s a great song.  The only thing I found disappointing was that they ended with “Diary of Jane”.  It’s not that I don’t like that song, it’s just not one of their best and I think they should have ended with something else from the new album.  But it’s all good.  Overall, I was happy with the spot I finally found even though it was so close to the speaker that my ears were ringing the next day.  I swear that I made eye contact with Ben.  He probably will never remember me, which is fine. I still say I’m positive that he at least saw me.

Anyway.  It was an awesome show and an awesome night.

To the guys of Breaking Benjamin, you took the breath right out of me.

Goodnight.

Depends on the day really. I guess so

What makes you the happiest?
Friends, music, not working

Do you believe in yourself?
Not really.

So I took a really long nap when I got home from work.  Now I have no idea how I am going to sleep tonight.  Oh well,  I guess it’s a good thing I don’t work tomorrow morning.  We’re taking the dog to get a picture with Santa.  Later I have game.  Other than that it’s looking like a nice relaxing day.  I’ll probably get my final project for Javascript done.  I’m glad the break is coming up. Even with only two classes, balancing school and work is kinda rough.  Not that I can’t do it, it’s just nice to have a break.  And friends are coming home from college for the break as well.  It’ll be fun times, I’m sure.    Miss Lizzy and I already have plans to make a trip to Claire’s so she can get her ears re-pierced and so that I can get a third lobe piercing.  Actually, I’ve been tossing around the idea of just getting the cartilage done first, because it will be sore for awhile.  I really don’t think I’ll want them all at once.  Although the lobe is nothing, and I’ll be able to ignore them after the cartilage is pierced.  But then, I have no idea how much time all that will have to heal before Tara and Breanna-banana want to make a trip to Tara’s tattoo artist to get a touch up, because I’ll be joining them so I can get my tragus piercing.  Ah decisions.

Wow, sorry. Random ramblings..

Anyway, I’m going to go eat dinner.

But I wanted to let everyone know:
ONLY 2 FUCKIN DAYS UNTIL THE BREAKING BENJAMIN CONCERT!!!!

.:Skin White as Winter as the Sky Returns to Grey:.

Well, it’s that time of year again.  You know, the cold, frustrating time.  Filled with frozen car doors, icey roads, chilly rooms in the house, and all that snow you didn’t ask for.  Yeah, that’s right. It’s winter.

Aside from my favorite holiday, Christmas, there is nothing I like about this time of year.  And while I’ve lived in Chicago my whole life, I hate it all the same each year. I spend the entire winter praying that April would hurry up.  Because there’s nothing like a White Christmas in the Windy City.  I’m a summer baby.  I was born in summer, and my favorite season has been summer for as long as I can remember.  My mood is usually about as bright as the sun.  And since the sun hides for a majority of winter, I pretty much want to do the same thing.

On Wednesday, when I went on Facebook, I noticed that my aunt posted a photo album of my uncle Bob.  It’s been eight years, this month, since his death.  And we tend to miss him a lot around this time.   This is my favorite picture of him from that album:

unclebob

I want to dedicate the song of the week to him this week.  Here is “Anthem of the Angels” by Breaking Benjamin. (edit: for some reason, the normal audio player I use is not working so this is one I found on youtube.)

White walls surround us
No light will touch your face again
Rain taps the window
As we sleep among the dead

Days go on forever
But I have not left your side
We can chase the dark together
If you go then so will I

There is nothing left of you
I can see it in your eyes
Sing the anthem of the angels
And say the last goodbye
Verse 2
Cold light above us
Hope fills the heart
And fades away
Skin white as winter
As the sky returns to grey

Days go on forever
But I have not left your side
We can chase the dark together
If you go then so will I

There is nothing left of you
I can see it in your eyes
Sing the anthem of the angels
And say the last goodbye
I keep holding onto you
But I can’t bring you back to life
Sing the anthem of the angels
Then say the last goodbye

Your’re dead alive (x4)

There is nothing left of you
I can see it in your eyes
Sing the anthem of the angels
And say the last goodbye
I keep holding onto you
But I can’t bring you back to life
Sing the anthem of the angels
And say the last goodbye

We miss you, uncle Bob, your memory still lives on in our hearts. Love you.
