Photo Diary: Illumination at the Morton Arboretum

Last weekend Grizz and I doubled with our friends and went to this really cool tree light festival at an arboretum. I had an opportunity to play with my Lensbaby which is a super fun lens, impractical that it may be. It has little magnetic aperture disks that turn lights into cool shapes and it’s super perfect for Christmas lights because you get a lot of small shapes.

I took it off and tried to get some other photos too but I didn’t really get that many. I think it’s more fun to experience than to photograph. I left a gallery below. The ones that are hearts are all actually lights on the trees, you just can’t see the trees because it makes everything else blurry, and of course it was nighttime and I wasn’t using a flash. I still need to get the hang of the lens so I can potentially use it do more practical things… we’ll see. I never really get much time to play with it.

My layoff season at work is coming. My last day of work for the season is on Friday. So after that I’ll have a lot of time to update this blog. I’m going to work on reviewing Wet n Wild Beauty’s rainbow highlighter. I just got it and I was super excited to try it out. I’ve used it a couple times and I have a few things to say. That should be coming later on this week, actually.

I know I said I would review and swatch the Morphe x KathleenLights eyeshadow palette, but I feel like I’ve taken too long and the moment’s passed. But if people are still interested, I will still do it.

For now, enjoy the photos!

How’s your Christmas shopping coming along?

Photo Diary: This Heart

This week Grizz challenged me to use selective color (something that is very outdated and often used poorly) to tell a story. While I failed to get my point across I still ended up with something I’m pretty happy with so I decided to share.

I’d like to thank my sister for the assist with this, it was a lot of me setting up the shot and having her take the photo over and over again until it was right. I ended up with a couple other ones but I like this one the most. For some reason I’m having a hard time articulating this one… so I’m just gonna leave you to feel whatever you feel about it.

A lot of the time I’m so consumed with my day job that I don’t take the time to shoot or edit for me, so it’s nice to have Grizz challenge me to do something. Plus Phlearn on Instagram has a contest every week so if I feel inspired by it I try to enter.

P.S. I have a couple ideas in the works for posts, it just may be a bit before I get to them. And I did not forget about my wig collection. I’m just slowly collecting photos of them instead of actively trying to shoot it. And my birthday is coming up, so who knows I may get more. Thinking about a photo tutorial of my rainbow eyeshadow look also.

Con Plans for 2016 & Photo Diary: Alter Ego

With Anime Central just around the corner, it won’t be long before my social media fills up with upcoming cosplay plans. I figured now would be the perfect plans to address my plans for up and coming conventions in the Chicagoland area.  Sometime last year, I decided my ultimate photo goal would be to shoot cosplay professionally and make super awesome photo manipulations to go with it. One year later, I have not really moved very far forward in that goal. I love what I do right now, and I’m comfortable. My friend from work came up with a super awesome plan to start his own cosplay photo booth to set up at conventions. And he pulled aside me and a couple other friends from work who love to cosplay as well to see if we wanted to dress up and model for him so he can put out some adverts. And additionally, if he did set up a booth, we would be allowed free passes as well to dress up and wander around cons to send people his way. I think this would be a fantastic way to get a foot in the door for my goals, and I couldn’t wait to get photos take of my own costumes, so I jumped at this chance. I think we need to generate more interest, and the cost of a booth is not cheap so we need a way to get a good buzz going. But my photo session was several weeks ago now and I ADORE how they came out. I’ll post the gallery at the end of this post.

Meanwhile. Here’s the plan. Anime Central falls during a horribly busy time for my job, so it’s really hard to get time off for it. As it is right now, I work on the Friday and Saturday. I was really bummed about Saturday because my friends and I wanted to go to the formal dance they have. But alas, I have to work a graduation and OF COURSE it’s at night instead of in the morning. >.< It’s looking like I’m off that Sunday, so if money allows, I want to try to make it that day. (Being in the process of buying a house kind of means making sure your money doesn’t go anywhere haha) If we do make it Sunday, I will not be photographing that day. I just wanna run around in a simple costume and enjoy what’s left of the con. So I will probably throw together a Pokemon trainer costume and do just that. I am, however, helping a friend who’s new to this whole scene work out her first cosplay. She’s going as Kurisu from Steins Gate. I have the perfect wig for her so I’m working on getting that detangled and ready to go for her. Her boyfriend, who is introducing her to the scene is going as Rintarou and I’ll be helping him find a good wig for that. So, I’m living through my friends this time around. I think as soon as I find out the dates next year I’m going to try and put in the time off right away. I just feel bad for being unavailable during one of our busiest seasons.

Next, is my holy holiday with my friends, Bristol Renaissance Fair, which is in July. We won’t be going opening day, but still that Sunday. I’ll be doing my typical Dragon Trainer costume that I’ve been building upon for years. I’m actually going to be making my first attempt at styling a wig for that. Usually I just buy the wig I need, and most of the characters I do have pretty simplistic styles so I never need to do anything to them. I want to create a pretty Renaissance style braided look. I might even cut it. We’ll see. I figured, it’s the one I like the least, so if I ruin it I won’t be TOO sad. There’s plenty of wigs I could wear for the costume instead, and if I fail I can get one for next year that’s already styled or something.
At some point we’ll be going a second time so I’ll shoot then. I don’t know exactly when we’ll do that but I think it’ll be August.

And… we’re going to Wizard World, probably around the same time we make our second trip to the Fair.  If I don’t cosplay that day, I will definitely shoot. But Wizard World isn’t as exciting as say, C2E2, which I missed this year and hopefully I can make it next year, even if it’s the only con I get to go to.

So, those are my costume/photo plans for this year. Not as action packed as I would like, but hopefully one day I can turn that around and be able to work these cons as a photographer.

Now, here’s the gallery of photos my friend from work took of me. I have a Pokemon trainer set, which I’ll post some other time. This set is my alter ego, Jessamine, who’s back story I’ve talked about on here a few times. I like to think when I’m shooting at cons, I am her. But. Anyway. I love them. They turned out just a lovely as I’d hoped!

Photo Diary: Morning Routine

Sometimes you put your bluetooth speaker next to your makeup brushes and then decide you need take a photo. Ya know, no big deal.  But yeah, this is what a typical morning looks like for me. Just thought I’d share.

P.S. I got a couple new products so I may put together another review post soon.

PhotoSHOP Diary In Process: Come Sail Away

My  mom was looking for something cute to hang up in one of the spare rooms which already has sort of a nautical theme to it. So we got a cheap picture frame and I designed this for her in Photoshop. She loves Styx so I incorporated that into it. It didn’t take much to do actually. It was a matter of finding a cool nautical font and arranging everything in a way that looks pleasing. And finding a nice color scheme that works. I’m going to have her customize it, so when I show it to her I’m going to have her let me know if there’s anything she wanted to change.

So if it varies a bit, I may post the finished product. But I’ve been wanting to create something in Photoshop, so that’s what I’ve been working on. sailaway

Photo Diary: Back To Gaming w Bonus Story

I’ve decided to come on here and make a post since I’m pretty sure I’ve already neglected my New Year’s Resolution to post something once every two weeks. I think it’s week 3 since I’ve posted something last. But that’s okay, because I haven’t been up to anything interesting, so I don’t want to forcefully talk about… nothing.
I guess it’s not entirely true that I haven’t been up to anything. I’m back to work, which I love of course. And then there’s the thing I’ve been hinting at on Twitter and in recent posts. I guess I’ll just go ahead and say it’s about buying a house. I just didn’t want to make a whole post about it until it’s official. There’s been a lot of ups and downs there, and I’ve been actually writing the post as it goes on. Once it is official, that post will go live, and if nothing comes of it I’ll discard it completely.

This is gonna be a bit of a two for one post because I have a photo I wanted to share that has a bit of a story behind it.

I took this photo when inspiration hit me… when I was nowhere near my camera.IMG_20160205_214934

In addition, what I wanted to talk about today is, GAMING! If you’ve been here for awhile you’d know that I’m a bit of a casual gamer. I really love it but I feel that I seldom have the time to commit to games hardcore. It’s probably going to always be that way, but I play when I can and that’s fine with me.

It’s been a couple years since I’ve joined a D&D campaign even though there’s ALWAYS one going on in my group of friends. I honestly can’t think of a time when there wasn’t a game happening since I started hanging out with them.

The last game I played, I bowed out because I played a character that had a very specific backstory thinking it would fit. The character was Jessamine and the game was evolving in such a way where her story line simply didn’t mesh with the game’s.

Since then, I’d been toying with joining again but never really wanted to commit to it. Then one of my friends from a different social circle said he was starting a campaign: zero commitment. Roll a character, show up when you feel, the game will go on just fine if you don’t show. Perfect for my life. So I joined.
We’re playing 5th edition (my usual circle plays.. 3rd? Or statless.) and I decided to be a ranger. It’s been too long since I’ve played anything, so I wanted to stay in my comfort zone… and archers are my bread and butter.

It was a bit of a gateway game because now I want to join one of the games that my usual circle is playing again. I’m going to try Jessamine again, because I think it should work this time. It’s statless so it’ll be a bit easier to mold everything together.

My roomie has been playing her Pokemon: Heart Gold a lot recently too, which made me pick Pokemon: Y back up.  I saw in my old “Gamerz Corner” posts that I was going to do a Pokemon Adventures segment while I was playing White, where I update you where I am and what I’m doing in the game. I never did that, and I don’t know if I will. I never even finished White, if I’m being perfectly honest. It’s been disgustingly long time since I’ve finished a game of Pokemon… probably not since I’ve played the original Silver. 😦
I’m pretty determined to finish Y, because I really like it!  I’ll leave the rest up to you: if a lot of people like this, I’ll try and work some sort of gaming segment into my posts more often. If not, I’m just gonna go about my merry gaming ways on my own, which is fine too.

So, my gaming readers: what are you currently playing? What video game are you loving right now? Are you in any awesome D&D campaigns? 🙂
