Photo Diary: By The Light

When inspiration hits you while you’re helping your lovey fix your car, you just have to roll with it. I wanted to play with the natural source of light available, which in this case was one of those portable work lights and the light from the garage. Mechanic-

Since I can push the ISO a little more on my new camera I was able to pull this off with as little noise as possible.

As far as enhancing the photo in shop, I really only messed with the light source and added some smoke for dramatic effect. I think it turned out cool for a spur of the moment shot.

Photo Diary – Sleeping Beauty

Hey!

I’m alive! With a brand new computer! (Thank you Grizz <3)

I have entries planned and I think I can finally start editing and posting them! In the meantime, the lovely Dolce Vita and I collaborated again and made something beautiful. I recently upgraded my camera and I was dying to shoot again.

Here it is!

2017, Here I Come

Oh 2016. The year that took way too many celebrities. Including my goblin king. 😦

We certainly are happy to see you go, 2016.

For me personally, 2016 wasn’t all bad. After months of waiting Grizz and I finally bought our house this year so that was pretty awesome. And NYE was great as always. It was actually super relaxing to be able to ring in the new year with my close friends. I love them all and they make my heart happy. ❤

Last year, (I think) I broke my habit of not making New Year’s resolutions and made five. I only kept one. I promised myself anytime I would buy new clothes I would donate others that I don’t use. And while I didn’t do a whole hell of a lot of clothes shopping this year, I did that. The only exception is when I bought a set of cardigans, mainly for work. Because I really needed those. But I’m putting together a Good Will box, mostly with toys and stuffed animals, but clothes as well. So I’ll be making up for that anyway.

I had also promised myself to designate time to practice Photoshop, be more organized, and be better about cleaning, and blog more.  The Photoshop thing happened at first, but once my winter break was over, it went out the window. And everything else, I was just kidding myself. I mean, I’ll try again with that stuff but my main goals for this year are a little more vain. I mean, they may seem that way.

I’ve learned a lot about makeup over that past few years, and I’ve definitely branched out from where I started. My goal is to save money and treat myself to more high end products. Actually my goal is to be better about saving money in general. For one thing, this time next year I want to feel better about the winter break. So I want to  make an effort to really save enough to help supplement during that time. But also, I want to be able to really work on a wardrobe that suits me. A few years ago, I wanted to start following a pastel goth style and I never really did. But starting now I want to really involve myself in making my style be what I want it to be. Albeit, it’s probably not really pastel goth I want to chase anymore. I just want a style that outwardly reflects my personality. I just want to learn how to really be me, inside and out.
I really wish I took the time to photograph my look for NYE. I did a pretty eye look that turned out amazing. Maybe I’ll recreate it for something.

My photo goals are still the same. I would really like be great at Photoshop and work on shooting projects for myself. All that stuff has been neglected so I really want to take some time to practice my skills again.

As for blogging more, it is what it is.  I don’t think I’ll ever be a frequent blogger. So. That’s fine.

Anyway. How was your year? Are you happy it’s over? What did you do for NYE?

P.S. Are you interested at all in what I got for Christmas? Those kinds of things seem kind of braggy, but if anyone wants to see, I would do it. Lots of Pokemon related things happened.

Photo Diary: Illumination at the Morton Arboretum

Last weekend Grizz and I doubled with our friends and went to this really cool tree light festival at an arboretum. I had an opportunity to play with my Lensbaby which is a super fun lens, impractical that it may be. It has little magnetic aperture disks that turn lights into cool shapes and it’s super perfect for Christmas lights because you get a lot of small shapes.

I took it off and tried to get some other photos too but I didn’t really get that many. I think it’s more fun to experience than to photograph. I left a gallery below. The ones that are hearts are all actually lights on the trees, you just can’t see the trees because it makes everything else blurry, and of course it was nighttime and I wasn’t using a flash. I still need to get the hang of the lens so I can potentially use it do more practical things… we’ll see. I never really get much time to play with it.

My layoff season at work is coming. My last day of work for the season is on Friday. So after that I’ll have a lot of time to update this blog. I’m going to work on reviewing Wet n Wild Beauty’s rainbow highlighter. I just got it and I was super excited to try it out. I’ve used it a couple times and I have a few things to say. That should be coming later on this week, actually.

I know I said I would review and swatch the Morphe x KathleenLights eyeshadow palette, but I feel like I’ve taken too long and the moment’s passed. But if people are still interested, I will still do it.

For now, enjoy the photos!

How’s your Christmas shopping coming along?

Photo Diary: This Heart

This week Grizz challenged me to use selective color (something that is very outdated and often used poorly) to tell a story. While I failed to get my point across I still ended up with something I’m pretty happy with so I decided to share.

IMG_0653-Edit

I’d like to thank my sister for the assist with this, it was a lot of me setting up the shot and having her take the photo over and over again until it was right. I ended up with a couple other ones but I like this one the most. For some reason I’m having a hard time articulating this one… so I’m just gonna leave you to feel whatever you feel about it.

A lot of the time I’m so consumed with my day job that I don’t take the time to shoot or edit for me, so it’s nice to have Grizz challenge me to do something. Plus Phlearn on Instagram has a contest every week so if I feel inspired by it I try to enter.

P.S. I have a couple ideas in the works for posts, it just may be a bit before I get to them. And I did not forget about my wig collection. I’m just slowly collecting photos of them instead of actively trying to shoot it. And my birthday is coming up, so who knows I may get more. Thinking about a photo tutorial of my rainbow eyeshadow look also.

Con Plans for 2016 & Photo Diary: Alter Ego

With Anime Central just around the corner, it won’t be long before my social media fills up with upcoming cosplay plans. I figured now would be the perfect plans to address my plans for up and coming conventions in the Chicagoland area.  Sometime last year, I decided my ultimate photo goal would be to shoot cosplay professionally and make super awesome photo manipulations to go with it. One year later, I have not really moved very far forward in that goal. I love what I do right now, and I’m comfortable. My friend from work came up with a super awesome plan to start his own cosplay photo booth to set up at conventions. And he pulled aside me and a couple other friends from work who love to cosplay as well to see if we wanted to dress up and model for him so he can put out some adverts. And additionally, if he did set up a booth, we would be allowed free passes as well to dress up and wander around cons to send people his way. I think this would be a fantastic way to get a foot in the door for my goals, and I couldn’t wait to get photos take of my own costumes, so I jumped at this chance. I think we need to generate more interest, and the cost of a booth is not cheap so we need a way to get a good buzz going. But my photo session was several weeks ago now and I ADORE how they came out. I’ll post the gallery at the end of this post.

Meanwhile. Here’s the plan. Anime Central falls during a horribly busy time for my job, so it’s really hard to get time off for it. As it is right now, I work on the Friday and Saturday. I was really bummed about Saturday because my friends and I wanted to go to the formal dance they have. But alas, I have to work a graduation and OF COURSE it’s at night instead of in the morning. >.< It’s looking like I’m off that Sunday, so if money allows, I want to try to make it that day. (Being in the process of buying a house kind of means making sure your money doesn’t go anywhere haha) If we do make it Sunday, I will not be photographing that day. I just wanna run around in a simple costume and enjoy what’s left of the con. So I will probably throw together a Pokemon trainer costume and do just that. I am, however, helping a friend who’s new to this whole scene work out her first cosplay. She’s going as Kurisu from Steins Gate. I have the perfect wig for her so I’m working on getting that detangled and ready to go for her. Her boyfriend, who is introducing her to the scene is going as Rintarou and I’ll be helping him find a good wig for that. So, I’m living through my friends this time around. I think as soon as I find out the dates next year I’m going to try and put in the time off right away. I just feel bad for being unavailable during one of our busiest seasons.

Next, is my holy holiday with my friends, Bristol Renaissance Fair, which is in July. We won’t be going opening day, but still that Sunday. I’ll be doing my typical Dragon Trainer costume that I’ve been building upon for years. I’m actually going to be making my first attempt at styling a wig for that. Usually I just buy the wig I need, and most of the characters I do have pretty simplistic styles so I never need to do anything to them. I want to create a pretty Renaissance style braided look. I might even cut it. We’ll see. I figured, it’s the one I like the least, so if I ruin it I won’t be TOO sad. There’s plenty of wigs I could wear for the costume instead, and if I fail I can get one for next year that’s already styled or something.
At some point we’ll be going a second time so I’ll shoot then. I don’t know exactly when we’ll do that but I think it’ll be August.

And… we’re going to Wizard World, probably around the same time we make our second trip to the Fair.  If I don’t cosplay that day, I will definitely shoot. But Wizard World isn’t as exciting as say, C2E2, which I missed this year and hopefully I can make it next year, even if it’s the only con I get to go to.

So, those are my costume/photo plans for this year. Not as action packed as I would like, but hopefully one day I can turn that around and be able to work these cons as a photographer.

Now, here’s the gallery of photos my friend from work took of me. I have a Pokemon trainer set, which I’ll post some other time. This set is my alter ego, Jessamine, who’s back story I’ve talked about on here a few times. I like to think when I’m shooting at cons, I am her. But. Anyway. I love them. They turned out just a lovely as I’d hoped!
